Clouds of Azoth :: Experimental music event
14 April 2007 - Castelfranco Emilia [Modena – Italy]
Dadà Theatre - Piazzale Curiel 26

"Nuvole d’Azoto" is the Ist event of experimental music that the cultural association “LaRoseNoire” from Modena is planning for the next months.

The Festival regards ecology theme, as universal breath and the overall of daily gesture, concerning not only the action but also the start of the expression of thought, of the emotions, of the words that often we don’t considered as polluting, but on the contrary are involved at the same way in the building of ambient atmosphere in which we are absorbed.

Starting from this concept of “atmosphere”, as colourless place created by unanimous breath of everything, the Festival is named “Nuvole d’Azoto” (“Nitrogen Clouds”), referred both to the chemical element that forms most of our atmosphere, and to the alchemist’ Azoth.

The word “azoto”, referred to the gas with the same name, results from the french term “azote”, coined by Lavoisier in 1787 as a word composed by privative alpha and “zoé” that means Life in the greek language, because he noticed that the breath, and therefore the life as we know it, are impossible in a nitrogen atmosphere.Note the origin of another term referred to the chemical element at issue: in fact Nitrogen is a word composed by greek terms “Nìtron” that is (sal) nitro (saltpetre in english), and “Génos” that means birth: so in chemical language is “that producing Nitrogen”. Inside the name of the Festival you can find the double hint to the chemical element number 7, its substantial increase in habitat due to numberless uses, the possible modification of life on earth, and the artificial conservation of life itself and to the ethereal substance of the alchemists.

”Nuvole d’Azoto” will feature four international projects that will take turns on stage, creating a psychic and imaginativeness that will cancel any space between spectators and artists through self-made acoustic instrumentation, computer sounds and avantgarde machineries, videos and interactions with industrial and natural sounds.

The aim is provinding images and feelings of a Real world, even though still not present in the everyday reality of most of the people.

An Universe where you can’t find contrasts but only interactions, where technology and habitat combines themselves in a perfect harmony, where there’s no conflict about man and the things he built himself (for instance, the machines and the industrial society), things that he needs for everyday life, parts of his thought and his body at present.

An Universe where art and science are the result of a free mind, unconditioned; where the feeling of satisfaction rises from the deep union between knowledge and being. Through images, sounds, feelings evoked during this event we’ll enter in a new but present dimension, neither yet grounded to the longing for past, mostly daydreamed, nor the longing of an evasive and unlinkely future: the timeless present where happiness is now and forever in front of our eyes.

So “Nuvole d’azoto” will evoke the image of an endless and no boundaries Universe, where everything is possible and happens at the Moment, where nothing is wasted because every thing lives in the dimension of an actual and real ecology.

Performing Artists:

Alio Die (I): Alio Die alias Stefano Musso, artist from Milan, starter to compose ambient-electronic music under the monicker “Alio Die” since 1989, elaborating and mixing sounds from different sources.

Since then he has realised more than 25 cds, part of them seflproducted through his personal label Hic Sunt Leones, and others released by qualified labels, both italian and american (Amplexus, Eibon, Hypnos, Heart of Space / Fathom, Projekt…).

In the last years he collaborated with many artists, mostly of an international name: Robert Rich (USA), Vidna Obmana (Belgio), Mathias Grassow (Germania), Nick Parkin (UK), Yannick Dauby (Francia), Amelia Cuni, Raffaele Serra, Ora (UK), Antonio Testa, and others.

Alio Die music, composed by acoustic and evocative sounds, electonically handled and treated, form intimate landscapes resonance, tied to life and nature’s mystery and liricity. Natural and acoustic sounds and noises, elaborated with digital and multi-effect sets, are combined in a meditative and spiritual environment, that often becames like a sort or prayer.

Xabec (D): Xabec is the project of the german musician and musical therapist Manuel G. Richter, active since 1997 under this pseudonym, author of serveral experimental composition of electronic and acoustic music.

The sound created by Xabec is pure voiced, and shrinks from any genre filing. Since 2002 Xabec is produced by german label Hands, noted for minimal ed essentialistic design.

Xabec’s sound live is created in real time, thanks to the interaction that the musician make on his own instrumentations. But the technical qualification and the experience of Richter don’t allow much space to the improvvisatoion, despite the fact that the musician proposes to oneself not to have the absolute control on the kind of results during the live set, what is created is always fine and interesting, never accidental or superficial.

Since 2005 Manuel Richter is collaboratine with Anne Clark, the famous germa musician, still active, that in the 80’s opened a basic opening to the new horizons of experimental and electronic music of today.

Ab Ovo (F): Ab Ovo is composed by two french musicians, Jerom Chassagnard and Regis Baillet.

The duo works on the concept of Energy, his source and his vectors. The members of Ab Ovo are both interested in physics and natural sciences and during their performance they play over pauses, the expansion of the sound and the concept of Silence and musical vibration.

Since 2004 Ab Ovo is produced by the german label Ant-Zen section leader of vanguard electronic and industrial music.

Mimetic: Mimetic is the solo-project of Jerome Soudan, versatile musician and composer, who own a lively avant-gardistic and innovative spirit. Brought up as a classical musician, Jerome eventually approached to the contemorary and experimental music, linking orchestral sounds with ambient-electronic elements.

Active since 80’s, Soudan has a very long carrier behind him, organising festivals in Paris and Berlin, theatrical maker, classical drummer, in several contemporary music ensemble, avant-garde musician in electronic-industrial international scenery…

For the occasion Mimetic will present a listening performance that will join the most innovative electronic sounds with acoustic percussions and spoken-word.

Every Mimetic live set are accompanied with suggestive artistic videos, giving the show the peculiarities of a cinematographical imagery in which the fantasies of the audience find their own cast.
